Gary grew up in a farm and ranch environment, where his parents had a homestead in northern
Phillips county, about 4 miles from the Canadian border. When he was a young child his parents moved
to Loring, a small farm and ranch community north of Malta. There Gary's father ran the first grain
elevator, built when the railroad branch line came through Loring. His family always had a couple
of saddle horses, cows, and other animals. When Gary was ten years old, the elevator company
transferred his father to Columbus, in Stillwater county. In addition to running the grain elevator,
his family farmed and ranched in the Columbus area.
